Elliot Lake is really nice area for riding. Rebuilt a bailey bridge about 20 Km outside of town for Hydro last winter. If you do go stay at the Fireside Hotel if possible. Best eats in town is probably the Roadhouse. Avoid the chinese restaurant at all costs. And on weeknights everything closes around 6 or 7 pm.

Hi All,
Hope the trip plannings is going well! Having grown up in Elliot, it's was hard to move away for school and of course there's little to no trades-related work in Elliot Lake :pissed:. We love going back though and try to get up there any chance we can for some riding or R&R.

Just a word on the Fireside Inn...I wanted to let you know that they're closing their doors on January 11th, 2010. There's some speculation as to what will become of that building, but the Fireside is closing and supposedly it won't be reopening as a hotel/restaurant.

There was another post on here about Elliot Lake trails and accommodation (http://www.mudhole.ca/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=8354) and had some good information. If you're looking for camping, there is a City-run campground along Highway 108 on the north-end of town, pretty well right on the ATV trail. There's a detour around the campsite, but I would assume that as long as you aren't riding THROUGH the site, there shouldn't be any problem riding FROM the site. My parent's house backs onto the highway/campground and it's not usually too noisy or busy up there. There's also the Mississagi Provincial Park (http://www.ontarioparks.com/ENGLISH/missi.html) that has camping. Of course, I don't believe they want you riding your ATVs around the park and you would have to trailer to a departure location. It's a great park though and has many different hikes and activities throughout the Spring/Summer/Fall. If you're there, I suggest at least visiting and maybe taking a quick hike or a swim.

Hope that helps! Anymore questions, please ask!

AC

Everyone is welcome.

Thank you for the information about the Fireside Inn. We are looking forward to this ride.

The weekend of May 15 and 16 plus May 22 and 23 are available for us right now. Most snow should be out of the bush by then, and the bugs shouldn't be bad enough to carry us away, atv and all yet. Those dates are probably the best so far.

I'd be interested in tagging along. I've never been to Elliot Lake trails. What are the trails like? Would they be sport quad friendly? I have an 03 Rubicon, but my son has a Raptor 660 and would like to come as well. I know this is an atv site but would dirt bikes be welcome? My youngest son has a dirt bike he would enjoy coming as well.

Hi All... We went up to Elliot Lake last year on the September Long Weekend to ride. We had never been there before - and the people of Elliot Lake were so very friendly and helpful! We called the information centre - and they set EVERYTHING up for us... so when we arrived they had our campsite booked, trail passes ready, and all the informtion we needed to get around!
We met a group from the ATV club in Elliot Lake as they host rides every Wed. and Sat I believe. We pulled up to their clubhouse.. and from the moment we took off our helmet to intorduce ourselves - they made us feel like a part of their group. They were so friendly - helped us out when we got stuck, actually TOWED me back when I swamped my machine ... and took us to places that were absolutely beautiful! They invited us again the next day - and we were on trails for 7 or eight hours each day - and never crossed the same path twice!!! I cannot stress enough how weelcome they made us feel... and how much fun we had. We also made several new friends - and are keeping in touch through email.
We stayed at the town campsite.. plain and simple - but thats all you need - and we were able to ride our quads right from our site to the trails. We were lucky enough to see a couple of bears pass right through the campsite! They even allow you to ride on the highways and in town - provided you are a single rider. Nothing like driving through Timmie's on your quad!!!

We had people we had never met come up and talk to us - and offered us to ride with them as well. What a great feeling of Welcome!!!
We are now in love with the place and can't wait to go back up ..........PERMANENTLY!!

Thank you blondeee for your comments. It's good to hear about other's experiences as they travel. I know that when our club hosts rides and events, we try to make everyone feel welcome and help them when we can.

It's too bad the Fireside Inn is closing it's doors on January 11. Hopefully someone else will be able to reopen it.

It appears that the only other hotel in town is the Algo. They do have a secure compound for atvs and trailers.

Yes, it's great to hear your positive experiences with the trails in Elliot Lake. It's such a nice area and there are tons of trails. The Welcome Centre is great and there's a well-laid out mining museum located on-site as well. The employees at the Welcome Centre are always very helpful and informative. It's part of the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre located on HWY108 near the Timmes/McDonald's area.

I know there's a new Hampton Inn in town, which opened recently. If anyone is familiar with the Inn on the Lake, it's at this location. The Inn on the Lake was demolished a year ago to make way for the new hotel. If you ask me, the hotel doesn't seem to have the same "northern-Ontario feel" to it, but it is pretty nice and is located very close to the ATV trails. I haven't heard any reviews on the hotel yet, but it might be worth checking out as well.

Sounds like a great trip but and I'd love to come along with the wife but at close to a 10 hour drive I don't think it's gonna happen. But hoping everyone who goes has a blast!

Hi All,
I also put this in a separate thread, but for those wondering a bit about Elliot Lake, SnowTrax rode in the City and posted it on YouTube. It's all about sledding, but it's essentially the same trail system in place for ATVing as well:

Anyone looking for lodging I highly recomend Dunlop Lake Lodge they have rooms and I'm pretty sure you can ride from there. We had this as a start and return destination for a friends snowmobile trip of 45 people. We all had a fantastic time there the owners were great.

I'd be interested in going Deakin. Depends what's going on around that time because my birthday is on the 17th of May. So maybe it'd be my get away for my birthday  I'd be coming up by myself.

We have not selected a firm date yet, but we think May 20, 21,22, 23 and 24 are best for us. We know you need to plan ahead and reserve accomodations and make other arrangements. We think it best to do it that weekend for several reasons. So that will be the weekend, the actual dates may vary slightly. Thank you for your input and we look forward to meeting you in May if not sooner.

We are also planning an atv tour of Newfoundland in one of the first two weeks in September 2010.

I am interested in this ride,, and am also very familiar with the atv trails there (as of a couple of years ago anyway), being that I am a past club member from there, and have many miles of riding the trails..
Most are rocky and dusty, but great views everywhere,, to bad the fireside is closed,, great food,, Yes the Algo used to have secure parking , I do not know about now,, it was on top of the multi level parking lot located right at the Algo mall ( bonus is TH used o be in the mall also )..
I do not know the current state of Dunlop Lake Lodge,, bur I did hear it was not worth going to with the old onwers,, and have also heard the new owners are doing a much better job.
I also have most if not all the mapped trails and a few others on my Lowrance...( at least I did, will have to check )
I just have to convince my wife that I have ,, eh ,, a , a meeting up thee,, and Gypsy would be good to ride with you again,, been a while since Mattawa

If I did go I would be boon-docking some where with my truck camper.. so would arrange to hook up near Tims or right off the trails????

Wolf :grin::
