Welcome to the site Nathan. There are lots of questions about insurance here so if you handle it right you could create a lot of business for yourself here.

Maybe you could explain the criteria that Insurance companies use to substantiate such large and varied rates for ATVs. Are they considered high risk? Does age of the drivers have any bearing as with cars? Do the ATV drivers who display their 2 wheeling up and to the side have any bearing? Do ATV racing affect rates? ATV, 2-Up, UTV/SxS? etc. etc.

Be interested in your insight.

In general, when it comes to atv's, snowmobiles and motorcycles, rates can vary substantially between companies. From an insurance company stand point, these tend to be higher risks due to the fact that having an accident generally leads to higher payouts for injury as your are not strapped in and protected by airbags like a car. Some companies don't want this risk so won't offer insurance. Some may price it seemingly high to help offset claims cost. Others will accomodate writing the insurance if you insure all of your business with them. The rules do vary company to company. As far as the ATV affecting the price, generally they are classed by year, cost price new and cc. With the side by sides becoming more popular, the higher value can cause the rate to be more but I haven't experience them being classified in a different category as of yet. Coverage chosen affects the rate too. Liability only vs liability and comprehensive (theft) vs full coverage which includes collision. The higher the deductible (portion of claim payout you pay) will reduce the rate as well. As with cars, any form of racing is normally excluded. I do have clients that race but carry the insurance for recreational riding and to cover for theft.

I hope this helps answer some of your general questions, feel free to respond.

Thanks,

Nathan

So how does it work with collision? If someone rearends me when I am stopping am I able to make a claim? How hard is it to prove to the insurance companies?

Also, what kinds of accidents would be covered or not be covered? I'm just curious because I thought it was really only liability and comprehensive that most people went for.....I'm not even sure now what kind I have. I might have full coverage but have to check my policy again. I had no idea collision was covered being an offroad vehicle and all because you are bound to hit something by accident like a rock or a tree if you lose control.

Welcome aboard and we look forward to picking your brain and helping us out.

Thanks.

I'm sick of my present insurance company and am switching car, truck, home and both ATV's to.....AllState.

Allstate in Kingston already has given me a quote that makes it a no brainer to switch to them....
